With a laser level on a tripod you can set it up directly under your centreline by dropping a plumb bob (I made one with a paper clip, string and a nail)

from the centreline. The laser when all set at the correct height and level will shine a light onto a point on the bulkhead and if it is in the correct

position it will hit your mark. The light will also intersect and leave a light mark on the stringline.
